Introduction

This experiment is our submission for our school Science Faire 2008! It's pretty easy to do, a lot of fun, and very educational. It does require some preparation in case you want to do this for your own project.

The experiment tries to determine what effect soil quality has on plants growing in that soil. For this experiment 4 types of soil are used. First, normal sand; second, soil from the backyard; third, a store-bought product called "Miracle Gro Organic Soil;" and fourth, a home- mixed soil containing Happy Frog Soil conditioner, sand, fertilizer, lime, and more. Of all these soil we determine the physical and chemical composition.

We used the Luster Leaf Soil Test Kit #1601 to do the chemical tests. It is inexpensive, can be used 10 times for each pH, N,P and K test and is available at local Osh hardware stores.

The vegetable we are growing is Kale (Italian Lacinato / Nero Toscana), which you can find in the seed section of most garden centers. We used Kale because it should be easy to grow and has moderate nutrient requirements so we can see the differences in the soil easier.

Hypothesis

Our Hypothesis is that the Kale should do best in either the Potting soil or the Happy Frog mix as that is supposed to be the best soil you can get! We will see!

Measurements

Physical Soil Composition

Here you can see what kind of particles (rocks, sand, clay etc) our soils are made of. Will any of our soils match the ideal soil composition? What is the ideal soil composition for growing vegetables?

Chemical Soil Composition

On this page we show you the results of the chemical tests! Yes there are chemicals in our soils, but only the good kind we hope! What are the good chemicals and what do they do for the vegetables? Read and find out!

Growing Kale

Here you can see how we are growing the Kale in the 4 soil types.

Backup Kale started in greenhouse

Just in case the Kale does not germinate in the soil, we are attempting to germinate some kale in the greenhouse.
